About Root

Founded by North Shore resident, Jennifer Eddy, Root opened its doors in 2016 with the vision of preparing transitional-age youth for the workforce. Prior to launching, Root researched other successful programs that use culinary arts as a training tool for at-risk populations, including DC Central Kitchen, FareStart in Seattle, and Liberty’s Kitchen in New Orleans. In addition to culinary instruction, Root’s model includes life and professional skills development, financial literacy and, as needed, support in completing their high school education. As a social enterprise, Root operates three food service businesses that provide a real-world training environment for students while also generating revenue in support of its mission. These include the Root take-out café and catering businesses, and the HarborPoint event space overlooking Salem harbor.

Root’s 12 week, 240-hour program of direct kitchen and classroom training helps students transform their lives and futures through technical and experiential education in the culinary arts – leading to employment and financial self-sufficiency. Program participants graduate with industry-recognized certifications, a sense of accomplishment and newfound confidence and self-esteem. For more information, please visit: www.rootns.org
