Mason - Root Community Kitchen Team Member

Mason graduated from Root in 2023 and is a current member of Root's Community Kitchen Team. He works alongside CK team members, supporting Root's retail catering and community meal initiatives. Each week, they prepare over 700 community meals for individuals across the North Shore!

The Root Culinary Training Program, and my experience now working as an Alumni Kitchen Team member have given me a lot more ambition in life, especially in finding a career path that I enjoy. Working in a kitchen feeds people who have ambition.  Chef Keith is tuned into what motivates us to push ourselves to learn.  He gives us projects that are of interest to us so we find enjoyment in what we are doing. I have really enjoyed doing soup production and packaging, I like to explore flavor, texture and color in the different soups and Chef Keith gives me an opportunity to share my input, which helps me feel more confident in what I am doing. On top of that, knowing that my soup is going to people in need is one of the best parts of my job.”

Mason shares that the Root experience has helped him better manage anxiety.  It is easy to get overwhelmed in a kitchen. “I can compartmentalize what is happening and better organize my thoughts and actions.  I keep physical notes, and I rely on my teammates to keep me on track.”

Mason says he is most proud of graduating from high school this year, on time, and beginning a career that he never thought possible. Looking ahead, he wants to learn to do more baking and continue building his skills in the kitchen.
