Meeting the moment - Supporting local food insecurity, November 2025
In March 2020, Root launched its Community Catering initiative as an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and what began as a rapid pivot is now an integral part of our mission. Each week since, Root’s kitchen team has prepared meals for seniors, families, and children experiencing food insecurity across Essex County—work we proudly continue today through partnerships with organizations including Lifebridge, The Salem Pantry, My Brother's Table, Acord Food Pantry, the Salem YMCA, Girls Inc., LEAP for Education, and others.
Today, with SNAP benefits in limbo, Root is once again called to act with the same urgency and collaboration that defined our pandemic response. Our team has increased production of meals, soups, sides, and nutritious snacks, and has expanded our work with food rescue partners like The Boston Area Gleaners and Spoonfuls to reduce food waste and get more meals onto tables and pantry shelves.
As an Employment Social Enterprise, Root not only trains young people for the workforce, but also employs them in meaningful work that serves the community– a double benefit that uplifts individuals and strengthens our food system.
Food insecurity remains pervasive in our region, and instability at the federal level continues to threaten the well-being of our most vulnerable neighbors. Every meal prepared, every student trained and graduate employed, and each person supported through Root’s kitchen and program is made possible by your generosity and partnership. Your donation today will help Root Feed Opportunity and Community when it’s needed most.
With gratitude,
Nate Berkowitz
